One common complaint about conventional orthodontic treatment, which repositions the teeth with brackets and wires, is the length of time the patient must wait for results. Most patients who undergo standard orthodontic interventions must wait a minimum of 18 months before they can enjoy their realigned smiles, with timeframes extending to 2+ years for some patients.
Another approach, known as Pre-Orthodontic Periodontal Augmentation (POPA), can shave months from the period of time the patient must spend in appliances and help patients achieve the desired results more quickly.
With Pre-Orthodontic Periodontal Augmentation, a periodontist and an orthodontist collaborate to reposition the tooth. The process takes advantage of bone’s capacity to regenerate and remodel when acted upon by certain forces. When stimulated surgically, the bone can facilitate more rapid repositioning of the teeth.
Many patients who choose POPA can complete treatment in less than a year. Each patient is unique, though, and after the periodontist and orthodontist evaluate your case, they can give you a better expectation of how long it will take to straighten your teeth.
In POPA the periodontist will perform an initial outpatient surgery to prepare the bone for rapid teeth movement. The periodontist and the orthodontist will work together to plan the timing of placing the appliances on your teeth.
After the surgery is completed, the orthodontist will then continue to adjust the appliances as needed to fulfill the goals of the orthodontic treatment.
The initial periodontal surgery needed in POPA takes just a matter of hours. Patients typically choose sedation while undergoing the procedure.
POPA may appeal to a wide variety of patients, including both adults who are concerned about maintaining a professional appearance and teens who want to get their time in appliances over and done with as quickly as possible.
