What is LANAP?

May 28, 2012

The Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure (LANAP) is a very specific patented FDA approved protocol in which a laser is used to aid in the treatment of periodontal pockets. This can only be done with the Millennium Periolase MVP-7 and requires special training.

In the acronym LANAP, the letters “NA” stands for new attachment. Essentially, laser therapy creates an environment in which the microscopic fibers and tissues found in the gums will form a new attachment to the teeth. Only the LANAP protocol has been shown in microscopic studies to form this new (connective tissue) attachment. This revolutionary response is achieved by harnessing the body’s natural healing capabilities – no grafting materials are needed.

In the hands of a skilled periodontist, a laser designed solely for the treatment of soft tissues can be used to eliminate the bacteria that cause gum disease and resolve periodontal pockets. Opting to have your periodontal therapy performed with a soft-tissue laser, affords you many significant advantages compared to traditional surgery.

In the hands of a skilled periodontist, a laser designed solely for the treatment of soft tissues can be used to eliminate the bacteria that cause gum disease and resolve periodontal pockets.

The Millennium Periolase MVP-7 laser is very safe in that it cannot inadvertently damage the hard tissues such as the teeth and surrounding bone. Leading studies now show that the LANAP procedure is much less destructive than traditional periodontal surgery which has historically resulted in irreversible gum recession.

The Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure is also extraordinarily efficient. During the procedure, the laser can be used to clot the blood – so bleeding in not a problem. Many patients can enjoy a speedy recovery with minimal discomfort.

Below the gumline, sterilization of the periodontal pocket is instantly achieved, and the entire mouth can be treated in only 1-2 visits.

With the introduction of laser assisted periodontal therapy, patients are enjoying an unprecedented success rate following treatment. To add to the excitement, the procedure is safe for patients who may have underlying health conditions or those who are taking prescription medications.
