Increasing Your Quality of Life With Dental Implants

Replacing your missing teeth can make you feel better about yourself, the way you look and the way you relate to other people. If you feel like your quality of life has been compromised due to missing teeth, dental implants could make all the difference.
Deciding on Dental Implants

Although almost anyone with missing teeth could benefit from implants, it is important to consult with a periodontist to make a final decision. Some factors to consider regarding dental implants include:

  • Your general health
  • Health of your jawbone
  • Length of time your teeth have been missing
  • Health of your gums

If you have any issues with your general health, such as a weakened immune system or a systemic problem such as diabetes, you might not be a good candidate for dental implants. Also, if you have experienced bone loss in your jaw, a bone graft may be required prior to the implant procedure. Gum disease should be treated by a periodontist before you undergo dental implant surgery to prevent complications due to infection.
Having Dental Implants Placed

Implants are placed in a two-step process. The titanium roots are placed first, and during the healing interval, the titanium bonds to your jawbone so that the implants will remain strong and stationary in your mouth. This healing process takes several weeks.

After the roots have healed properly, your periodontist will place the visible portion of the implants. These comprise of the biting and chewing surfaces of the teeth, and are custom made just for you. The shape, size and color will match your natural smile.

Implants are permanent and stationary replacements for your missing teeth. They do not need to be affixed into the mouth on a daily basis, nor do they need to be removed for cleaning. Your dental implants will serve you for many years to come, keeping your smile beautiful.
