Patients who have been long-term denture wearers are likely to experience significant jawbone erosion. This bone atrophy occurs because the teeth’s roots are no longer available to stabilize the structure, and the jaw wears away as a result. Patients typically notice this phenomenon when their dentures don’t fit as well after a few years and need to be relined.
Now that dental implants have become such a reliable alternative to dentures, many patients are interested in pursuing them. However, dental implants generally require a sufficient amount of bone to support them and foster long-term success.
In the past, patients with significant jawbone erosion might have had to undergo a bone graft procedure prior to dental implant placement to ensure that they had sufficient bone material available to the implants. This meant that patients had to endure an additional surgery and tack on several months to their expected treatment timeline.
Now, your periodontist can use an innovative technique known as All-on-4 dental implants to offer more patients the opportunity to take advantage of devices.
With this procedure, the periodontist strategically places four dental implants toward the front of the jawbone, where atrophy progresses more slowly. Patients then receive a carefully crafted lifelike denture that is anchored by those four implants.
Additionally, the two outer implants are angled below the gumline, which also allows the periodontist to maximize available bone for dental implant placement.
As an added benefit, the All-on-4 procedure can be completed in just a few hours in the periodontist’s office. Patients go home with a brand new smile that very day!
Furthermore, the four dental implants not only hold the denture in place, they also stabilize the jaw and prevent further erosion by replacing the missing roots.
Have you worn dentures for many years? Don’t rule out implants as an alternative. All-on-4 dental implants may help you achieve the smile of your dreams.
